Hello Churroholic!

First cupcakes and then pie….now the latest food trend to be making its mark is churros!

The fried-dough pastry snack originating from  Spain and Portugal is definitely taking the foodie world by storm. These delicious fritters can be found from Costco to Disneyland. It’s not just at your local store or amusement park however because now there are specialty shops specifically specializing in the sweet treat! One of these places is Churroholic.

Churroholic is a cafe offering handcrafted churros, coffee and ice cream. They are the sister shop of popular boba shop, Hiccups and can be found next to several Hiccups locations. They have locations currently in Anaheim, Paramount and Carson, California and future branches will be opening in Whittier, South Gate and Santa Ana, California.

I recently had the (sweet) pleasure of visiting their Carson branch; the newest of all their locations. This place is definitely churro heaven. Their churro menu consists of flavors of original or glazed with chocolate almonds, chocolate sprinkle, coconut chocolate, matcha pebbles, and cookies and cream. Churros can be purchased solo or with ice cream. They also offer churro sandwiches and sundaes. As they mention on their website, dessert is definitely their passion! At Churroholic they really work to offer the freshest churro you will find in town and I noticed first hand them making fresh batches.

My handcrafted choice was the Cookie Monster ice cream and a matcha pebbles churro.

img_0780

The cutest churro with ice cream ever was served. Not only was it pleasing to the eye, it was pleasing to the palete as well.  The freshly made churro was perfectly warm and crisp. The fruity pebbles were a nice sweet touch. The ice cream was sweet and milky smooth. Hmm not only did I become a Churroholic that day but a Cookie (ice cream) Monster too.

Like many of the food trends in the past years; churros are sure to become a favorite for many. It certainly is a new dessert favorite of mine and I for one have a churro crush.

img_0112

To go along with their fresh baked offerings, Paris Baguette has a full coffee menu with iced coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, americanos, mocha and drip coffees!

Hello VIP “Passport to Redondo Beach” Party at Bluewater Grill!

At the beginning of this week, I had the pleasure of attending the VIP “Passport to Redondo Beach” at Bluewater Grill. This event was the official launch of Bluewater Grill’s new waterfront dining patio and lounge.

The party had a very unique them to it. All guests were given a passport.

img_1108

This passport was the access to the VIP tour. There were six spots in the tour and each of us guests were to collect stamps at six special stations that Bluewater Grill set up.

The first station was where we each picked up our passports. This was Bluewater Grill’s Fireplace lounge.

The next station was the Waterfront Patio. This new patio is one of the largest waterfront dining spaces in the South Bay and overlooks the King Harbor marina. It includes a fire pit and lounge like couches for guests to enjoy Bluewater Grill’s delicious eats.  During the party, we got to feast on a yummy cheese and cracker platter that was paired with Bluewater Grill’s select fine wines.

img_1142

Station #3 was Bluewater Grill’s bar. Here VIP guests were treated to a Pilikia Margarita. This refreshing concoction consisted of Sauza Hornitos tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice and a splash of lemon. The bartender also had a Virgin version available.

img_1107

The fourth stop of this fun party was dining room. Here guests could enjoy Fanny Boy oyster shooters. The oyster shooters could be enjoyed with or without absolute pepper vodka! Bluewater Grill doesn’t mess around with their oysters and anyone who enjoys the seafood delight would be pleased.

img_1143

Next stop of the tour was the Captain’s cabin. The Captain’s cabin is one of the dining areas at Bluewater Grill where guests can have a private party. It can seat 20-60 guests. I can personally say that this really is a beautiful area for a party.  I once had the pleasure of dining here for an event celebrating Bluewater Grill’s launch of the New England lobster and clambake.

img_1111   img_1109

At the Captain’s cabin, all of us guests got to try Bluewater Grill’s delicious crab cakes.

img_1105

Our last stop for the VIP party was the upstairs Avalon room. This is Bluewater Grill’s exclusive banquet room. Since this was the last stop of this very special night, we were treated to a variety of special appetizers.

There were jumbo shrimp and “sea bon bon” sashimi sea scallops.

img_1146

Those seafood starters were just the beginning of the treats at the Avalon room because soon after the waiters kept bringing out more dining delights.

One of the very first offerings brought out turned out to be my favorite of the night; Bluewater Grill’s Caribbean clam chowder. I loved the hint of coconut in this soup. It brought a unique tropical twist to clam chowder

img_1103

Next up was a refreshing and healthy treat. They served Bluewater Grill’s lobster mango salad. The mango was a special touch that brought a little bit of sweetness to this appetizer.

img_1104

Bluewater Grill is not purely seafood because they have some meat options as well for meat eaters like myself. They have a great duck appetizer that is served on top of a crisp wonton. I found the duck so savory and tender. How innovative too that they would pair this with a wonton! I love the combo!

img_1101

Definitely not lacking was the sweet dessert offerings! It sure was a sweet feast that included vanilla cake, chocolate cake, eclairs, cream puffs, lemon bars, fruit tarts and walnut bars.

img_1088

It was so hard to choose which dessert to get! Every thing I did try was simply amazing.

img_1102

The dessert treats were a perfect pairing with coffee. Hmm this seemed like a passport to bliss.

img_1106

It was truly one amazing night and a wonderful tour of the world of Bluewater Grill.

Congratulations Bluewater Grill on your new waterfront patio. This Hello Kitty Foodie cannot wait to be back!

Hello Honeymee!

“Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch
You know that I love you
I can’t help myself
I love you and nobody else….”

Sometimes I randomly burst into song. I’m that nerdy girl you’ll see at the stoplight singing loudly in her car and smiling goofily.  It’s just the way I am when I get happy and I sure was happy when I stepped into Honeymee for the first time ever.

Honeymee is all about sweet treats that will help brighten your day. They offer up true milk ice-cream with natural honey.

The menu is one of the cutest I’ve ever seen.  It’s a rather sweet concept with names like “Darling” (true milk ice cream), “Dear” (true milk ice cream with Ghiradelli chocolate sauce and sprinkles of sea salt from France), “Sweetie” (true milk ice cream with 100% natural liquid honey swirl), “Honeymee” (true milk ice cream with 100% natural honeycomb chip) and “Babee” (your choice of ice cream in a fresh sweet bun.

With such happy, lovey dovey names, one would expect the sweetest treat ever with their offerings and I did find myself wondering if my heart would be happy once I tried their ice cream.

The lucky ice cream that won my heart that day was the “Sweetie.” I chose to get a Sweetie with an extra topping of almonds.

Presented to me was a beautiful cup filled with soft, creamy ice cream drizzled with sweet honey and topped with crispy almond slices.

It was dare I say love at first sight.

IMG_1699

True love is not defined by looks alone however and only time would tell if the Sweetie really is worthy of my (foodie) love.  At my first taste of the Sweetie, I knew instantly that indeed I couldn’t help myself and that I loved Sweetie like no other ice cream. ;), Yes, sugar pie honey bunch, I love you and nobody else…”

My heart was happy and I felt like bursting into song. Honeymee’s ice cream is indeed one that will make your heart happy. The quality of their ice cream standouts and I could taste the freshness of the milk just at one bite. The honey swirled in was just the right amount of sweet and the almonds on top brought an extra special crunch to the already tasty treat.

Needless to say I smiled goofily like a love struck girl and sang in the car, my whole ride home that day after my Honeymee trip….

Hello Mom’s Baked Filipino Desserts!

My mom has been on a baking kick recently! She’s been experimenting with various Filipino kakanin. Kakanin is Filipino term for Filipino sweet delicacies. They are sweet desserts that typically include coconut milk and sweet rice. One special main ingredient that is never missing is love. These desserts are always made with a labor of love. They’re typically served at family parties and special occasions.

One of my favorite Filipino desserts that my Mom has recently made is cassava.

Ingredients she used for this sweet dessert are: 2 packages of grated cassava, 2 cans coconut milk, 1 can condensed milk, 4 eggs and macapuno strings.

First up for making this was she preheated over to 325F.
She then mixed all of the above ingredients in a mixing bowl and then poured it into a rectangular pan. After baking for about 30 minutes, she topped the cassava with the macapuno strings, spread it evenly and then put it back in the oven for another 30 minutes. The result of this was a wonderfully soft cassava cake. I loved the overall soft consistency of the cake throughout and the macapuno strings on top were a nice touch! It gave a perfect sweet kick!

The other Filipino kakanin that my mom recently experimented making is karioka! Karioka is a sweet sticky rice ball deep fried.

Ingredients for the main rice ball are 1 cup sweet rice flour, 3/4 cup coconut milk, 2 cups cooking oil and 1 cup shredded coconut. For the outside glaze, ingredients are 1/2 cup coconut milk and 1/4 cup brown sugar.

My mom didn’t have any shredded coconut and so she went with a using kaong instead. Kaong is sugar palm fruit in syrup. To make this dessert, she mixed the sweet rice flour, coconut milk and kaong and then from the mix formed little balls. Each dessert ball was then deep fried until golden brown. The glaze was made separate. The coconut milk was boiled and then brown sugar was added. Once the glaze sauce thickened, the karioka balls were dipped in. The result of this was a nice, sweet karioka. Outside it had the perfect crisp and inside it had a sweet mochi like texture. The kaong was a pleasant twist giving the karioka an extra little sweet kick right in the middle of the dessert! This was my mom’s first try making these cute little snacks and she did an awesome job. They were yummy! 🙂

I’m very proud of mom and love how she’s learning to make all these Filipino desserts! All of the ones she’s made so far have been a success and have brought out some smiles at our family parties! Yay mom & yay to happy desserts! 🙂
